Once the king of American apples, this variety is named for the Revolutionary War hero who popularized it.
Baldwins are crisp, hard, and richly flavored. They mellow in storage.

- Baldwin is a great apple. In my review, I give it two stars (out of three).
- Baldwin the apple was brought to the attention of Baldwin the man during the course of surveying for the Middlesex Canal (Massachusetts).
- A stone monument marks the site of the original tree.
- New England communities fought over this apple.
- Baldwin trees died by the thousands in the harsh winter of 1934. Farmers replaced them with McIntosh, and an era ended.
